THEOLOGICAL RESEARCH EXCHANGE NETWORK
Version 2.1
INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS
BEFORE ANY INSTALLATION, YOU SHOULD ALWAYS BACK UP YOUR CURRENT
INFORMATION IN CASE OF AN UNFORESEEABLE PROBLEM.
SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS: The computer running the program must be
100 percent IBM compatible with at least 450 k of free memory
before running the program, and 40 K while running the program.
The hard drive the program will be installed on must have at
least 5 mb of free disk space. To determine your available
memory and/or free disk space, consult your DOS manual. The
available memory while running the program will be displayed
on the upper left of the first menu screen. A 386 or faster
computer is recommended, but the program will run on a 286.
The speed of the computer and hard disk will determine how the
program preforms. The faster the computer and the more free disk
space available, the more efficient the program can operate.
NETWORKS: This program is NOT network compatible. This does not
mean that you can't install it on a network, but it does mean that
only one person can run the program at a time.
INSTALLATION: Insert the diskette into either drive A: or B:,
and change to that drive.
EXAMPLE: If you put the diskette into B: drive, at the DOS prompt,
enter "B:" (without the quotes) and press enter.
Next, enter "INSTALL" (without the quotes) and press enter.
The Installation program will create a new directory on your C: drive
named "C:\TREN". If the TREN directory is already there, the message
"DIRECTORY ALREADY EXISTS" will be displayed on the screen.
If you want the program installed on a drive other than C:, lets say
F: for example, you would enter "INSTALL F:" (without the quotes)
and press enter.
The Installation program will un-compress the compressed file and
install the new program and data files into the TREN subdirectory.
After de-compression has finished, the program is ready to use.
No other procedures are required for installation.
*** For those of you who are familiar with other database programs such
as dBASE III or FoxBASE, the "TREN.DBF" file is compatible with them.
HOWEVER, the sort file "TREN.CDX" is NOT compatible with any other
database product. Trying to use the "TREN.CDX" with FoxPRO (for
example) will damage the sort file. Doing so will result in having
to re-install the data to correct the damaged files.

OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS
Pressing the F1 key will display a HELP window throughout the program.
The first screen you will see (SCREEN 1) will give you the choice
of which database you are going to work with. Move the arrow keys
up or down to highlight the desired database, and press ENTER.
SCREEN 2 has five options:
BROWSE & SELECT DOCUMENTS:
This option allows you to browse ALL the records in the database.
There are many new features included in this new version that
was not in the old version. There are two modes to view the
information. The first mode that comes up on the screen is
the detail mode which shows all the information on the screen
for any given record. You can only see information for one
record at a time. See SCREEN 3. The other mode is the BROWSE
mode which lets you see 15 different records at the same time,
but only shows you part of the record at once. See SCREEN 4.
Pressing the ENTER key will toggle between the two modes.
Moving the arrow keys right, left, up, down, PgUp and PgDn
allows you to see more of the information. See SCREEN 5.
These keys function in both the DETAIL and the BROWSE modes.
In BROWSE Mode only, the Ctrl-PgUp moves to the top of the file,
and Ctrl-PgDn moves to the bottom of the file. The Ctrl-End
moves to the far right column, and the Ctrl-Home moves to the
far left column. The ESC key returns to the menu.
The information can be viewed in different sorts. To change
the sort, press ALT-S, and the sort window will appear on the
screen. See SCREEN 6. Select the item you want it sorted by
and press enter. If you choose SUBJECT, a list of subjects
will be displayed on the screen. Find the desired subject by
using the arrow keys, or type in the first few characters of the
name, and the program will quickly move to that subject. Once
the subject has been located, press the ENTER key to sort by that
subject. Only the documents that are associated with that
subject will be displayed on the screen.
The information will be instantly sorted and
displayed on the screen. You will notice at the top of the
screen it will indicate what order the information is currently
sorted in. See SCREEN 7.
Once the document has been located that you want to order, press
the F5 key to SELECT that document. Notice that the upper right
of the screen shows the total number of documents selected to
order. Pressing the F5 key on a document that is selected will
un-select it.
The column widths of all the items can be changed to increase its
size, or decrease its size. To increase the TITLE column to see
more of the title, move the cursor to the TITLE column, and press
the F10 key. The F9 key will decrease the width of the column.
As you can see on SCREEN 8, the column widths can be changed to
allow you to see all the columns at the same time.

OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS (continued)
Also available in the BROWSE mode, is a feature to let you move and
locate specific information very quickly. Notice on SCREEN 9,
the information is sorted by AUTHOR. From the keyboard I have
entered "JONES" (without the quotes), and quickly moved to that
section of the database. Whatever field is your current sort will
be the field that will be searched when you enter keys from the
keyboard. The keys that you type will be displayed on the bottom
left of the screen. They will disappear as soon as the cursor is
moved up or down.
SEARCH & SELECT DOCUMENTS:
This is a detail search routine that locates documents for you
by any or all of five fields of information. See SCREEN 10.
If you enter information into two fields, the computer will
locate only the documents that match both the information entered.
When your cursor is in the SCHOOL or SUBJECT field, pressing the
F2 key will display all the available SCHOOLS or SUBJECTS.
SCREEN 11 shows 26 documents located when I entered the word
"ASK" (without quotes) into the TITLE field. As you can see, the
word you are searching for does not need to be at the beginning of
the field. As you move up and down in the documents, you will see
a record filled with fish. This separates the documents that were
matched during the detail search and the rest of the documents.
See SCREEN 12. After locating all the matching documents, you
can change the sort to any of the columns. Here again, once
you have selected a sort, you can enter keys on the keyboard and
the computer will quickly locate them. See SCREEN 13. The F5
key will select/un-select documents in this section as well.
VIEW/PRINT ORDER FORM:
This selection will let you first view on the screen all the
documents you have selected to order. Before viewing on the
screen, you will be allowed to enter the name and address
that you want printed on the order. See SCREEN 14. SCREEN 15
shows a sample of an order that is being viewed on the screen.
After finished viewing on the screen, press the ESC key. Next
you will be asked if you want to print the order. You may answer
with a "Y" or "N". If you entered a "Y", the order will be printed.
There is a sample Order Form printed of two documents selected
during the "ASK" search described above.
UN-SELECT ALL DOCUMENTS:
This selection will un-select all the documents that were
selected using the F5 key. This option is available so
after you print your order form, you won't have to go back
and manually find and un-select all the selected documents.
RETURN TO PRIOR MENU:
This option will return you to the beginning menu (if you have
the conference papers installed), or will return you to DOS.
